The Need for Ethics in Indian Country
Before we go any further, let’s talk about why this course
is extremely important in Indian Country. Although Indian
reservations have made tremendous progress in economic
development, education and other areas, they still fall
short of goals in critical areas such as; jobs, housing,
due process, law and order, violation of tribal
constitutions, etc. These social ills may very well be
manifestations of a lack of “ethical behavior” on our
reservations.
Individuals who practice ethical behavior also practice
self-honesty. Self-honesty is the key to addressing issues
on our reservations. Throughout this course, you will be
called upon to test your own values.
If you believe abortion is wrong, is it acceptable to
violate your own civil laws and unlawfully remove from
office a politician who supports abortion?
If you feel strongly enough about any issue does that
justify overturning an election, if you have the power to
do so?
