"Making life better!"
Diabetes Virtual Field TripLike all of our field trips, this one has been designed to include sites that are of interest to people with disabilities in Indian country and with resources that include that very important quality of being free. Cooking to manage your diabetes - A cookbook on line. In our Adulthood, Aging and Disability workshop, we discuss a research study that found cooking to be one of the activities older women with disabilities still do on a regular basis for themselves and their families. In several areas of our website we discuss diabetes and the importance of maintaining a healthy weight for all people with disabilities, and in particular for those with diabetes. Everything about Diabetes by Dustin and his Grandma- from genetics to depression and everything about diabetes in between. This is an on-line course from Montana State University, presented as conversations between a high school student and his grandmother. It starts out with his mother being taken to the hospital in a diabetic coma and the rest of the course is Dustin having questions answered by his grandma, biology teacher and others. Some of it does not sound much like a grandma or a high school student, but it is all accurate information and far less boring than most introductory guides on Diabetes. About.com tells everything about Diabetes - Okay, we admit a bias. About.com is one of Dr. De Mars' favorite sites, and no, they don't give her any money to say that. The lead article here varies in importance from day to day. For example, one day that we checked it was on dessert, which we really did not think was of earth-shattering importance. However, that is one of the things we like about this site is that it has something on everything. Check the menu on the left side of the About Diabetes page and you will find dozens of topics. Diabetes 101 - is an overview of diabetes. This would be a good site to read if you or a family member has recently been diagnosed. We really like the writing style. How could you not like someone who begins an article on diabetes with "Most people never think about their pancreas." |
