Referral
Most organizations have a referral form for testing children for suspected disabilities. We always recommend that the first step in diagnosis be a complete medical exam. We have heard too many stories of children with hearing impairments diagnosed as mentally retarded, children with Tourette’s Disorder diagnosed as emotionally disturbed. After any medical problems have been identified or ruled out, additional testing may be recommended including a language assessment by a speech pathologist or intelligence testing by a psychologist. The specific referral will depend on the problems identified.
