Young Children with Health Impairments: The sources we usually recommend first are the Virtual Library, other pages on the Spirit Lake Consulting, Inc. site and the pages linked below. Managing Asthma in the Schools, from the U.S. EPA is a booklet on how to make the air in your school healthier for anyone who breathes. It demonstrates exactly what we said at the beginning about universal design. (What, you don't remember what we said at the beginning? We are truly crushed!) National Association for the Education of Young Children - care for infants and toddlers with special needs - on the web You can download a PowerPoint presentation specifying exactly what are "other health impairments" There are also entire shelves on Attention Deficit Disorder and Diabetes .
To find more resources on the Caring for Our People training CD and website, please enter the word "asthma", "ADHD" or whatever your concern, in the search box below.
Blackboards and Bandaids is a site that mostly has stories about people's experiences with children with health conditions, either the children themselves, parents, siblings or staff. We think it is particularly useful for people living in rural communities because you may be the only child in the third grade who has diabetes or the only one who has a brother with cystic fibrosis. The hard part is that you can't find other people who are experiencing the same thing. This site has lots of personal stories from real people. We have listed more sites on each page under specific conditions, e.g., asthma. There are other good sources out there, and if you have some you recommend, please email us at COPT@spiritlakeconsulting.com if you don't have email click on this link to send us a form with your suggestions. |
