Overcoming the Five Biggest Ethical Problems for
Tribes
... and here they are. The five biggest
ethical problems identified in our survey were:
1. Hiring your relatives
2. Getting paid for forty hours and working 30 (or less)
Technically taking a pencil from your desk and using it at
home is stealing. However most people (although not
everyone) would agree that is not really grounds for
dismissal. However, if you took home a truck from your
workplace nearly everyone would agree that is grand theft
auto and you should be fired.
What does this have to do with work hours? Strictly
speaking, you are contracted to work 40 hours a week and if
you work less that is like stealing from your company. Most
people would agree that it is not a big issue if you came
to work a few minutes late once or twice - kind of the
attendance equivalent of taking home a pencil. What if you
come half an hour late every day? That is 10 hours a month,
120 hours a year - or three weeks of work.
3. Using your expense account for personal benefit
4. Getting away with illegal or unethical behavior
5. Lack of personal responsibility
Do you agree that these are the major ethical issues for
tribes? Have you seen examples of these? Give us your view.
