DISABILITY ACCESS: Empowering Tribal Members with Disabilities & Their Families
Provided by Spirit Lake Consulting, Inc.
Vocational rehabilitation assists people with disabilities in getting and keeping a job. They can help you decide on your career goals, pay for clothes for an interview, buy gas for your car so you can get to work the first few weeks and pay for on the job training. Many reservations have tribal vocational rehabilitation programs. These are also called Section 121 programs after the law that authorizes these programs.
Enrolled tribal members with a disability and who are able and willing to work are eligible for tribal vocational rehabilitation services. You do not need to be enrolled in the same tribe on which the program is located. Someone from the Three Affiliated Tribes living on the Spirit Lake Reservation, for example, could get services from the program on the reservation where he or she is living. You can also receive services from the state vocational rehabilitation program, if that is more convenient for you, for example, because you live in Bismarck. The North Dakota Vocational Rehabilitation website provides more information on VR and contact information for all state offices. The Disability Access workshop on Youth and Adulthood discusses vocational rehabilitation, finding and keeping a job at great length.
