If you are concerned about abuse, neglect or other mistreatment of a person with a developmental disability or mental illness, contact your local Protection and Advocacy Project office. Each state has one of these as well. Their services are free and they have offices throughout the state. Click here for a list of the offices in North Dakota to find one near you.We have found that some Protection and Advocacy offices are not very active in defending consumers rights. Sometimes they don't even return phone calls. In that case, don't be afraid to call the state Protection and Advocacy Project and complain about not receiving the assistance you need.

Both the Client Assistance Program and Protection and Advocacy Project will keep all information confidential. So, if you have questions about how you have been treated but you don't want a counselor to know you are 'telling on them', don't worry. You can call these offices and get confidential advice.
