SPEECH & LANGUAGE IMPAIRMENT
Imagine for a moment if you couldn't speak. How would you let someone know you would like to play with them? How would you share with your friends that you finally beat that girl at pool that always beats you? How would you make any friends in the first place? Speech disorders refer to difficulties producing speech sounds or problems with voice quality. Individuals with speech disorders understand language, but they cannot pronounce words so that other people can understand them. A language disorder is an impaired ability to understand and/or use words in context. People with language disorders may have trouble understanding directions or in coming up with the words to express themselves. Over one million children receive special services for speech or language impairment. As large as that group is, this type of disability is not limited to children. Many older adults experience speech impairment as a result of stroke, accident or illness.
