We should point out that encouraging family members to be independent does have its risks. For one, experimenting with alchohol and other drugs is more common among children and teenagers who are left home alone. People with disabilities who are living independently are more susceptible to abuse by strangers and staff members of facilities where they might live. While it is no one's favorite subject, let's discuss the issue of abuse next.
